"Bird of the Month" Profiles:

Cerulean Warbler
(Dendroica cerulea)

Cerulean Warbler Length: 4.5 inches
Wingspan: 8 inches
Weight: 9 grams
Diet: Insects

Each year, this species becomes less common in its traditional breeding habitat among the mixed hardwood forests of the East. The winter habitat of this species, mature mid-elevation forest in the northern Andes is being depleted rapidly, as are the forests of the same sort along its migratory path through Central America. As a result, this bird's population has been reduced by 70 percent, according to data collected in the last 40 years. Breeding birds in the Ozarks and Appalachians move significantly earlier than more northerly birds, often appearing on territories as much as two weeks earlier than transients passing at the same latitudes. Birds that breed in the Great Lakes region are most numerous in the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys during spring migration.
